Dialysis for 11 months old boy

Timely dialysis at a city hospital has saved an 11-month-old boy from renal failure, a condition that could have occurred because of blocks in the kidneys. K.G. Hospital Chairman G. Bakthavathsalam has said in a release that the boy, Hussain, was brought to the hospital recently with the complaint of blood in vomit and also diarrhoea. While the child suffered this for two days, he had not passed urine for an entire day.

His pulse was feeble and the abdomen had bloated. There was high urea and creatinine. All these had pointed out that the child could have died if treatment had been delayed. He was found to suffer from haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a temporary block in the kidneys caused by red blood cells. A catheter was inserted into the abdomen to wash out the waste or toxic materials. This procedure was called peritonial dialysis treatment. The child underwent dialysis for seven days, but developed infection on the eighth day. He, however, recovered and was now fit to be discharged, the release said.Diarrhoea and vomiting were very serious conditions in young children. This required early treatment to prevent fatality, it said.
