Portal on textile sector launched
Handlooms.com, a vertical portal launched recently, aims to bring together multinational textile brands and manufacturers in the country on a common platform. Its chief executive officer, D.G. Ladha, told presspersons here on Wednesday that the portal had details of textile manufacturers, wholesale traders, textile centres and suppliers for various textile products such as sarees, t-shirts, carpets, children wear and men’s wear.He said plans were on to identify exclusive handloom centres in the country and display the details on the website so that international buyers could have direct access to the weavers and master weavers. It would help in creating a brand for the handloom products and thus create value to it.
The website would also offer guidance and consultancy on fashion designing, international trends, technology, selection of yarns, patent registration and customisation.“We intend to form a board of people who have real concern for this industry to share their thoughts and ideas,” he added. “This is basically a B to B website,” he added. It would help international buyers know about the textile centres in the country, the products and the manufacturers directly. Thus, they would be able to source their needs directly and Indian textiles would be able to compete price-wise in the international market.Currently, with a number of intermediaries, the prices went up without value addition, he said.
