Fly menace continues

Flies on a plantain leaf at a feast in a residential area near the Coimbatore Corporation garbage yard at Vellalore.Complaints of flies invading houses and function venues and settling over food resurfaced on Sunday at Mahalingapuram, a residential layout near the Coimbatore Corporation’s garbage yard.“I am not able to open the doors and windows in my house at Konavaikalapalayam (another area near the yard),” president of the Kurichi-Vellalore Pollution Prevention Action Committee T. Ayyavu said.

Narrating the woes of people who gathered for a puja at a temple at Mahalingapuram and a feast and poor feeding as part of it at Konvaikalpalayam, he said: “None of us could stand in peace during the puja. And, we ate food that was contaminated by the flies. Swarms of flies that feast on the garbage at the yard came to the feast venue and spoilt it,” he said. While the function saw flies in greater numbers on Sunday, the menace troubled the residents to no end every day, the committee president said.Mr. Ayyavu said that tonnes of garbage accumulated in the yard should be removed and disposed of elsewhere.

This was the only solution to the problem faced by more than 20 layouts situated around the yard.“The Corporation can use its lands within the city. They cannot say that this is not possible. I was a union leader for the conservancy workers. So, I know that disposal in various locations in the city is possible,” he asserted.Mr. Ayyavu said that after suffering the problems caused by the garbage yard for the last four years, the residents found it difficult to believe that the Corporation’s waste management project would provide a solution.“The residents are now thinking of selling their houses and shifting out as health problems keep worsening because of the yard,” he said.
