Immersion of Vinayaka idols passed off peacefully
The immersion of Vinayaka idols as part of the chaturthi celebrations passed off peacefully in and around the city on Monday amid tight police security.In Coimbatore city, three idols were immersed on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. As many as 63 idols were taken out in a procession for immersion at various places in the city on Monday. The rest of the idols will be immersed on Wednesday. Brief disturbance to traffic was reported from Ukkadam and Tiruchi road areas. Ninety-three idols were immersed at Muthannankulam, Kurichi tank and Singanallur tank this evening. A procession carrying 99 idols is scheduled for Wednesday.
Commissioner of Police C.K. Gandhirajan assisted by Deputy Commissioners of Police P. Sugumar (Law and Order), P. Nagarajan (Crime), S. Manoharan (Traffic) and S.V. Karuppasamy (Headquarters) supervised the security arrangements.Of the 1,005 idols installed in Coimbatore Rural District, 650 were immersed on Monday evening.Hundred odd idols would be immersed on Tuesday, the police said.
