Trauma and critical care course at Ganga Hospital

Participants undergoing the trauma and critical care course at Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore.A Comprehensive Trauma Life Support Course was held at the Ganga Hospital here on Wednesday and Thursday by the Coimbatore Chapter of the International Trauma Anaesthesia and Critical Care Society (ITACCS).The course was held every year for anaesthesiologists, ENT (ear, nose, throat), dental, facio maxillary, neuro, orthopaedic, plastic and general surgeons, emergency physicians, intensivists, neurologists and nephrologists.

A two-day conference (on Friday and Saturday) was also organised.Organising chairmen of both programmes and S. Rajasabapathy and S. Rajasekaran said the objective was to achieve zero mortality in trauma. Explaining the number of deaths and disabilities caused by accidents, they said that the meet was organised to discuss in detail all issues critical to saving lives and improving the condition of trauma victims.Dr. Rajasekaran said this was not a course that served as a space for vacation for the participants. Trauma management training on animal models was part of the course. Organising secretary J. Balavenkat said participants were sent a voluminous text to trauma care. They had to study this and take a test at the course.

A certificate in trauma care was given to them only if they passed the test. Those who did not pass were given certificates that merely mentioned that they had “attended” the course. Among the medical fraternity, the word “passed” made a huge difference from “attended” in any doctor’s bio-date. This spoke of the seriousness with which the course was viewed at across the world, as part of an overall approach to trauma care.Forty-three faculty members from all over country and 15 from Australia, the U.S., the U.K., Hong Kong and Pakistan took part. Past president of ITACCS and Senior Staff Specialist and Director of Intensive Care at Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals in Sydney, Australia, Michael Parr was the course director.
