‘Perur Natyanjali’-Sweet moments

‘Shanmatham’ by students of Srineketan, ‘Parvathi Parinayam’ by students of Sri Devi Nirtyalaya, ChennaiThe eleventh annual dance festival, ‘Perur Natyanjali,’ organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis at the precincts of Patteeswarar temple, Coimbatore, was a homogeneous blend of melody, dance and devotion.Students of Pandanallur Natya Academy, Perur, presented traditional dance on the first day, under the guidance of Guru Ganapathiappa. The Bharatanatyam recital of Melattur Srikant and wife Ashwathi (daughter of Kalamandalam Saraswathy) was full of verve, grace and depth. Their theme was ‘Saivam.’ ‘Moolaadhaaramoorthi’ by Papanasam Sivan was beautiful with sprightly jathis. Srikant began ‘Irakkam Varaamal Ponathenna Kaaranam’ (Gopalakrishna Bharati) with a moving prelude and enriched it with relevant and vivid sancharis.

Bharathiar’s ‘Shakthikkooththu’ (Sivasakthi), ‘Azhagu Deivamaaga Vandhu’ (Kavadichindu) and the concluding ‘Shankara Srigirinatha Prabho’ (Hamsanandhi-Swati Thirunal) were presented with great involvement. Nattuvangam was by Kalamandalam Saraswathi and vocal support was by Arun Gopinath. Kiran Gopinath on the mridangam and Sivaramakrishnan on the violin were quite good.‘Shanmatham’ (the six paths of devotion established by Adi Sankara) has been a favourite theme with dance schools each presenting it with its characteristic stamp. Mridula Rai of Sriniketan, Coimbatore, had done a lot of homework and it showed in the selection of suitable slokas and compositions.
Along with her disciples, she presented ‘Sri Mahaganapathiravathumaam’ for Gaanapathyam, ‘Soorya Moorthe’ for Sowram, a Kaavadi Aattam and ‘Kaa Vaa Vaa’ for Kaumaram, ‘Mudhugaare Yashodha’ and ‘Vandanamu Raghunandana’ for Vaishnavam, ‘Ambaa Sambhavi’ (sloka) and ‘Paalinchu Kamakshi’ for Shaktham, ‘Bho Shambho’ for Shaivam and concluded it with ‘Brahmamokate’ with the message that all paths lead to the same God.Bhavani Kishore Kumar’s emotional rendering of the slokas and kritis proved a great strength to the orchestra, consisting of Vijayaraghavan (mridangam), Guruvayur Rajamani (violin) Sunil Kumar (flute) and Baiju (veena) who were equally good with their instruments. Mridula Rai wielded the cymbals and guided her disciples efficiently.

Sridevi Nrityalaya, Chennai, won the admiration of the organisers and spectators alike for their ‘Parvathi Parinayam’ with more than sixty participants ranging from three to thirty years. Interestingly choreographed and neatly presented, the dance drama impressed with lovely songs, appropriate costume and excellent team spirit. Kadalmathi’s lyrics had been set to music by Balabharathi and Kalyani Kalyanaraman while Rajeshwar Kumar and Gomathinayagam, along with good orchestra, added life to her lyrics. Harini as Siva and Archana Raj as Parvathi stood out with their excellent performances though each participant deserves adulation. Somasekhar and Mridula Rao of Abhinava Dance Company presented ‘Ananda Narthanam’ following a lovely introduction by guru, Nirupama Rajendra. Explaining the ‘Ardhanaari Tatvam,’ Nirupama pointed out that man lends strength and reason while woman lends grace and joy, thus giving human life wholeness and fulfilment. Mridula and Somasekhar exhibited the right combination of ‘lasya’ and ‘thandava’ and its effect on the spectators was amazing.
