Rs 3.77 Cr sales target fro khadi sales

Karthik (right) and Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam (left) paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 139th birth anniversary before the start of the khadi sales in the city on Tuesday.The district has been given a target of selling khadi items worth Rs.3.77 crore for 2007-08.A press release from the Khadi and Village Industries Board said that khadi items for 1.96 crore were sold last year.District Collector Neeraj Mittal launched the sale of khadi items here on Tuesday to mark the Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations.
Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik were present at the launch.The release said khadi thread and cloth units, village industries units and outlets selling dresses, footwear and soaps were functioning well across the district.The State Government had also announced 30 per cent discount on khadi, 20 per cent to 30 per cent on silk, 20 per cent on woollen and 30 per cent on polyester products on Gandhi Jayanthi and during Deepavali celebrations.Arrangements were being made to put up stalls in panchayat unions, Government hospitals, offices of the State transport corporation and other wings, colleges and polytechnics. The release called upon various sections of the public to buy these products and help in the economic uplift of the rural people involved in producing these.
