Very good move to avoid accident
The police in West Zone have embarked on a drive to avert accidents on highways during the small hours by compelling the drivers to take a break and refresh themselves to get over the fatigue after plying the vehicle for a long distance all through the night.Going by the accident statistics relating to those on highways, the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, ordered using the police check-posts to refresh the drivers.Statistics revealed that most of the accidents took place during the small hours when the drivers tend to sleep owing to fatigue after driving in the night.Based on his instructions, the Superintendents of Police in all the seven districts under the supervision of the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police at Salem and Coimbatore ranges are carrying on with the exercise.Policemen have been instructed to identify vehicles having single driver (i.e., without a spare driver for taking over). These vehicles would be stopped at check-posts where they would be asked to have a refreshing face wash and after a refreshing tea/coffee, they would be permitted to proceed further. This had resulted in drastic fall in fatal accidents on highways, especially from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m.
