All these are expected to take off in January after going through the due process of clearance, according to the civic body. The functioning of equipment with such technologies was demonstrated to Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Corporation Commissioner P. Muthuveeran and Deputy Mayor N. Karthik at the Corporation on Friday.

One of these is for the fool-proof monitoring of the functioning of streetlights, the Commissioner said. While the Corporation officials could monitor this from a centralised system at the civic body’s office, the public could spot on their computers at home, which light was not functioning in their area.Basic data of the location of the more than 30,000 streetlights could be loaded into the Corporation’s system. The public could go to the Corporation’s website and get a link to the on-line monitoring. Sensors would be fixed to the lights to track them down. The Corporation expected this system to reduce its reaction time to repair malfunctioning lights. Poor streetlight maintenance is one of the major issues raised in the Council.

The Corporation also planned to go in for an energy-saving device to help cut down the power costs incurred on streetlights. “It will save 30 per cent of the energy that we require now for the lights,” Mr. Muthuveeran said.Energy saver units could be fixed to the lamp posts. These reduced the power consumption by bringing down the voltage of the lamps while at the same time maintaining the lux levels as per regulatory standards. Energy saving periods could also be set. For instance, the voltage could be brought down during times when very bright lighting was not required.

It was said at the presentation on the equipment that this technology for mass outdoor lighting application could be used for streetlights, lighting in industries, educational institutions, hotels and even by the railways. The Commissioner said that the Corporation also planned to have a biometric system to enable officials and other staff members to mark the attendance with their thumb impression. They could place their thumb on the equipment for it to scan the impression and process the details of the person and pass it on to the master server. This also would help check whether all the bonafide staff members were present.
The equipment manufacturers said the technology did not allow the marking of attendance by proxies. When a staff member placed his thumb, his photograph also appeared on the equipment’s screen. The technology would also be of immense help in the preparation of pay rolls that required data on the attendance of each employee. While the planned global positioning system for its vehicles might take some more time to procure, the civic body would have an electronic tagging technology device to monitor the movement of these, especially the trucks that remove garbage from the city and dump it at the compost yard.“There are complaints that instead of three trips, the trucks do only two. The new technology will help prevent this,” the Commissioner said. The device, described as a tag, would be fixed on the outer side of the vehicle. A tag reader at the entrance of the yard would pick up the signals from the vehicle and register it entry. This would help in checking whether the vehicles made their mandatory number of trips every day.
