Pattammal’s voice is an embodiment of classical purity and discipline,” N. Murali, president of The Music Academy, Chennai, and the Managing Director The Hindu said here on Friday.

Releasing the book, Ganasaraswathy D.K.Pattammal, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, he said beneath the soft exterior of the musician was a revolutionary.Hailing from an orthodox community she set the trend in singing the ‘Pallavi,’ which was till then a male bastion. During the days when women would not dare to perform on stage, Pattammal broke the barriers.Though she had no structured learning, she perfected the art and science of music and specialised in ‘laya,’ which was unusual among women singers, he said. The singer believed that musicians should not merely play to the gallery and that the level of the audience had to be raised. The book had done justice to the living legend and had captured the essence of the musician in a fine manner, Mr. Murali said.
Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, chairman, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra, said the book was not just a biography but, documented the evolution of music in Tamil Nadu. Despite reaching heights in music, Pattammal prefered to maintain a low profile.A year had gone into the collection of information required for the book, which had some of the rare photographs of the singer. It also contained interesting anecdotes of hers. Mr. Vanavarayar added that the book was an authentic record of her life and music. The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s next initiative would be a book on composer Periyasami Thooran. The first copy of the book was received by Pattammal’s grand daughter and carnatic musician, Nithyashree Mahadevan.

Published by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the book was edited and compiled by Nithya Raj.Chairman of Lakshmi Mills and patron of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, G.K.Sundaram; carnatic musician R.Vedavalli; and president of Federation of City Sabhas, Chennai, R. Krishnaswami, were among those present.
