D.K.Pattammal's boigraphy
A biography on D.K. Pattammal, one of the living legends in Carnatic music, will be released on November 23 at the Bhavan’s auditorium in R.S. Puram.The book, “Gana Saraswathi D.K. Pattammal – Dimensions of a divine songster,” documents her life and music and encompasses a collection of rare pictures and information about the singer.“Her songs were not just confined to divinity. They had evoked a nationalist fervour too as she has given life to many of Bharathiar’s lines,” said B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore Kendra.
Pattammal was the first from an orthodox community to perform on stage. She popularised the compositions of Papanasam Sivan and Periasami Thooran. She was also the first musician to sing at the Music Academy, Madras, continuously for 50 years.Published by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the book has been compiled and edited by Nithya Raj. The coffee table book has been priced at Rs. 350.N. Murali, President of The Music Academy, Chennai and Managing Director, The Hindu, will release the book and the first copy will be received by Nithyashree Mahadevan, grand-daughter of Pattammal.G.K. Sundaram, Chairman of the Lakshmi Mills, will preside over the function. Musician, R. Vedavalli and R. Krishnaswami, President, Federation of City Sabhas, Chennai and Secretary of Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai, will offer felicitations.A music concert by Nithyashree Mahadevan will also be held on the same day.
