Modern fish market soon at Ukkadam

Pynthamil (third right) and officials reviewing construction of fish market near Ukkadam on Tuesday.A modern fish market of the Coimbatore Corporation is coming up in the city.An 8,000 sq.ft. building along the Ukkadam Bypass Road is being built to house the fish and a few meat stalls that are now functioning in the market opposite the Ukkadam Bus Stand.South Zone Chairman of the Corporation P. Pynthamil said after inspecting the construction of the building on Tuesday that the new facility would be completed by the end of March. “This will be a state-of-the-art facility and almost 70 per cent of the construction is over,” he said.The Rs.1.37-crore project aimed at providing 67 stalls, a majority of which would be for vending fish. Each stall would have an air-conditioner.About 500 sq.ft. of the total structure would be earmarked for a cold storage facility. This would help prevent the meat products from perishing soon.“Though a project entirely of the Corporation, this facility will be established in such a way that it will look like a corporate venture,” said Mr. Pynthamil. The chairman referred to resistance from some sections to the projects because of fears that the new facility could lead to lack of hygiene in its surroundings. These fears had been raised even in the Council even as the Corporation authorities assured that no smell would emanate from the building.
Mr. Pynthamil allayed these fears saying that an air-conditioned facility and proper cleaning of the premises and disposal of waste would ensure there was no health hazards for the people living in that area (Ward 41). He said that Corporation officials were even taken to a similar facility in Bangalore in order to show them how public-friendly it was.
