NGO planning for website
Non-Governmental organisations (NGO) working for the disabled in the district are planning to have a website to document their work. Statistics presented in a meeting for NGOs organised by the UDIS Forum, a network working for employment of people with disabilities, revealed that though Coimbatore district had contributed considerably to the field of disability, most of the NGOs did not seek grants from the Government owing to lack of awareness on schemes pertaining to disability. A website documenting the work in disability would facilitate easy interaction between NGOs and would also enable sharing of information on growing trends in disability among them.As many as 24 NGOs attended the meeting. The importance of working closely with organisations and parents of people with disabilities in empowering persons with disabilities through education and employment was stressed. The NGOs appealed to the Government to entrust the responsibility of running day-care centres under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to disabled peoples’ organisations and parents groups.Early intervention was one of the most neglected areas in disability. The Government should sensitise teachers to the need for early intervention programmes to enable them to attend to children with disabilities.
