City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan congratulating the members of the crime prevention special teams for their exemplary performance during the Deepavali season in the city on Saturday.The 10 special teams formed during Deepavali have helped prevent major incidents of crime besides resolving cases leading to a recovery worth over Rs. 11.35 lakh, City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan said on Saturday.Mr. Gandhirajan appreciated the teams and said that the members were given the task of curbing crime in shopping areas.
The teams concentrated on Oppanakkara Street, Big Bazaar Street, Gandhipuram, Cross Cut Road, 100 ft road and DB Road.The teams led by Assistant Commissioners of Police S. Jayapandian, M. Palanisamy and M. Annadurai functioned under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), P. Nagarajan. The teams were asked to focus on chain snatchers, two-wheeler lifters and burglars.They arrested 17 accused in 12 chain snatching cases and 13 two-wheeler theft cases and recovered stolen property worth over Rs. 11.35 lakh. They also secured 40 pocket pickers including women involved in over 17 cases reported in city buses.
The city already had 31 motor cycle patrols, 24 four-wheeler patrols and 38 cycle patrols.The crime wing had been asked to prepare an updated dossier on criminals and their modus operandi so as to pre-empt their functioning, the Commissioner told reporters.To a query, Mr. Gandhirajan pointed out that the remote suburbs in Sai Baba Colony and Peelamedu were witnessing a spurt in incidents of house breaking during day.As preliminary investigations revealed the role of a section of migrant construction workers in such offences, the police were now focussing their attention on them.The Commissioner said that of the stolen property worth Rs. 2.17 crore the city police had recovered property worth Rs. 1.77 crore. The personnel had been asked to improve the recovery rate within the next two months.
