Training centre for cancer detection

Sankaranarayanan (left) of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in the WHO interacting with doctors and students at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in the city.The PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research here has sought recognition as a training institution for all healthcare providers in the early detection of cervical cancer. The institute has said in a press release that it made this request recently to R. Sankaranarayanan of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an organisation under the World Health Organisation (WHO). Dr. Sankaranarayanan assured the institute that the agency would consider the request, the release said.

The WHO official was here to review institute’s programme for early detection and treatment of cervical cancer During an interaction with students, Dr. Sankaranarayanan explained cost-effective methods of early detection of cervical cancer. The release said the departments concerned in the Central and State Govts had spoken to Dr. Sankaranarayanan and Associate Professor of the Department of Community Medicine at the PSG institute R. Rajkumar on developing a cervical cancer control programme for the State.

The institute had requested the WHO to consider establishing a national institute for preventive oncology and research to function as a first-of-its-kind nodal centre for training in cancer prevention and research. Dr. Sankaranarayanan also launched Institute’s CANRED India movement for cancer education among the people. This was a movement to sensitise the public to the ill-effects of smoking, chewing tobacco and consumption of alcohol and fatty food.
