1.75 Cr sanctioned for BU's physics dept

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has sanctioned Rs. 1.75 crore to the Department of Physics, Bharathiar University, for experimental and theoretical research.According to a release from P. Kolandaivel, Professor and Head, Department of Physics, the sanction has been made for procuring equipment such as Powder X-Ray Diffractometer, Fourier Transform Infro Red Spectrometer and Raman Spectrometer, and augmentation of the computer laboratory.

The equipment will do material characterisation studies such as identification of elements, compounds, phases, crystalline nature and molecular dynamics. It is expected to be of use to research scholars of physics as well as to scholars from other departments. It will speed up and enhance the research publications of the university, the release says.The funding is also expected to strengthen the postgraduate and research programmes of the department. Some portion of the amount will be used to improve the central computer laboratory set up by the department with help from the DST.The department has already completed projects worth Rs. 2 crore funded by various agencies.
