Consumer forum resents
The Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, K. Kathirmathiyon, has flayed the decision of the Government to levy service charge for various transactions at the regional transport offices across the State with effect from December 7.In a memorandum to the State Government, Mr. Kathirmathiyon said the introduction of the service charge would set a wrong and bad precedent. The Government was meant to serve the people and there could not be any levy under the head ‘service charge’.If the overheads for computerisation involved additional expenditure, the Government could very well go in for amendment to the Motor Vehicle Rules and increase the fee fixed for every transaction reasonably. The argument that Andhra Pradesh Government had introduced the concept cannot be accepted and a mistake or a wrong step by one Government could never be cited as a reason for the others to follow.
