PCP inaugurated

The importance of this cash crop places much emphasis on developing qualified personnel in the sugar sector, N. Vijayan Nair, Director, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, said here recently.Inaugurating the Personal Contact Programme (PCP) for the recently started M.Sc. Sugarcane Technology course which is offered through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, Dr. Nair said that the new programme was timely and relevant for improving the human resource of the country so as to meet the research and extension demands that would lead to the development of the sugar industry.G. Selvaraj, Director, ODL, TNAU, said that the course had received tremendous response. Many candidates from Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, had registered for the course.The course materials were prepared based on the technical expertise of the scientists. They were designed to be self-instructional.The course that was jointly being offered by the Sugarcane Breeding Institute and TNAU was committed to the development of sugarcane research and extension in the country.
