Home Guards Day celebrations
A rally held as part of Home Guards Day celebrations in Coimbatore on Saturday.Route march by nearly 150 members of the Home Guards from Police Recruit School Grounds on Avanashi Road to Gandhipuram marked the beginning of the Home Guards Day celebrations on Saturday.The march led by a band and a company with weapons was led by Area Commander of Home Guards, T.K. Dhanashekar and Deputy Area Commander Rooshna S. Beemani. The aim of the march was to create awareness on the existence of such a force and the nature of services rendered by them in supplementing the efforts of the police in crowd control, law and order maintenance, crime prevention and traffic regulation, Mr. Dhanashekar said.
Later at a function, close to 75 Home Guards who had put in 10 to 25 years of service were felicitated. Those felicitated included members who assisted police in tracking crime cases, traffic children’s education park co-ordinators and President’s Medal winners.The Area Commandant General of Home Guards, A. Sivakumar, was also felicitated for his 25 years of service. T. Radhakrishnan, Inspector-General of Police, Director of Civil Defence and Deputy Commandant General of Home Guards, was the chief guest at the celebrations which was presided over by C.K. Gandhirajan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city in the presence of B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, Chairman of Bharatia Vidya Bhavan.Mr. Radhakrishnan said a training centre for Home Guards would be established at Udhagamandalam shortly at an outlay of Rs. 40 lakh.Fund allocation for sports activities had been increased from Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 4.5 lakh.
