SHG members honoured
Folk dance by the self-help group members at a function organised recently by the Non- Conventional Energy Development (NERD) Society in Coimbatore.About 60 members of Self-help groups are carrying out waste collection effectively in the Vadavalli Town Panchayat, Amrithavalli Shanmuga Sundaram, president of the Vadavalli Town Panchayat, said here on Wednesday.Inaugurating a function organised by the Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Development Society in connection with its 25th year celebration, she said the society encouraged women, especially through its promotion of SHGs.According to a release, she said that the panchayat will shortly implement the ‘waste to manure’ project, which in turn will provide additional employment opportunities to the SHG members. She appealed to the women who were below the poverty line to organise SHGs and formulate income generation programmes.
V.T.Bakthavatchalam, president of the Veerakeralam Town Panchayat, said the panchayat was waste-free only because of the direct involvement of the public, non-Governmental organisations and SHGs. The panchayat was going to implement composting methods for converting waste to manure.The society had shifted its focus from non-conventional and renewable sources of energy to soil and water conservation, waste collection and treatment and taking electricity to tribal areas, K.Sathia Jothi Kamaraj, president of the society, said.Under its women empowerment programme, the society had formed about 1,500 SHGs.
