Ban parking of 4-wheelers on X Cut Road

The decision to ban parking of four-wheelers on Cross Cut Road has made available more space for smooth flow of traffic. The Coimbatore City Police have commenced a drive to streamline parking of vehicles in busy commercial and shopping areas in the city in order to make the road space available for free flow of traffic. In order to implement short-term measures for streamlining city traffic, City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) S. Manoharan had identified parking problem prone pockets.

With the help of the Corporation vacant lands belonging to the local body had been identified nearer to the parking areas for turning them into designated parking lots.To begin with from Wednesday, the City Police have enforced a ban on parking of vehicles i.e., four wheelers on either side of Cross Cut Road while parking of two-wheelers was allowed on one side of the road at extreme boundary. Collector Neeraj Mittal took a drive down the Cross Cut Road to take stock of the benefits of the new system of parking.

People have welcomed the move since the entire road became available for free flow of traffic. It may be recalled that ban on parking on Cross Cut Road was enforced during the Deepavali season in 2007 on an experimental basis.Mr. Gandhirajan pointed out that those owning commercial establishments, shops and shopping complexes were duty bound to provide parking space for the clients visiting their premises.Unfortunately most of the shops in the city lacked parking space besides forcing the customers to park their vehicles on the road the shop owners and their staff also park their vehicles on either side of road right from the morning till late night. With the vehicles occupying major space on either side of the road vehicular movement and free flow of traffic had become a major problem.

Shop owners, office-goers and public visiting these areas for shopping would have to park their vehicles only in the designated parking lots and walk-up the distance.People should bear with such minor inconveniences considering the interest of the public at large i.e., the traffic congestion, police officials pointed out. Henceforth, people visiting the Cross Cut Road shops would have to either park their vehicles in the Corporation parking stand near the 8th street i.e., next to Lakshmi Complex or at the Swarnambika layout parking lot, henceforth.Similarly in the next phase, the police are also drawing up plans to ban parking on DB Road in R.S. Puram and in Big Bazaar Street. Police officials said that efforts were on to identify new spaces for creating more parking lots in addition to the one near the Town Hall and one behind Oppanakkara Street area.

For vehicles on DB Road bylanes on either side of the road and the Corporation land in the area was being considered for turning them into a designated parking stand. City Police have requested the cooperation of the people in enforcing these traffic reforms since it was aimed at streamlining the city traffic.
