The passengers aboard the Barowni-Ernakulam Rapthisagar Express had a providential escape while the train was entering the Coimbatore Junction.While proceeding towards the junction, an electric loco engine was chugging towards the Express on the same track. It was a close shave for the passengers onboard as the loco driver managed to halt the engine 800 metres away from the Express.Though, the driver was suspended for the lapse. Sources described this as a rare incident. The electrical loco should not have crossed the signal point. But it did and was approaching platform No.1 to which the Express was arriving at 1300 hours.However, a major collision was averted as the driver halted the engine. But the Railway treats averted collision on a par with accidents. An official source said: “At this moment, we can only speculate on how the incident could have happened.Perhaps, the speed of the engine might have been more than the prescribed limit. It is a procedural lapse.’’ The driver is being questioned further.
