ET Campus Quiz 2008

Winners Nigil Varghese (extreme left) and S Premchand (extreme right) of PSG Institute of Management, receive the trophy from Cognizant Coimbatore operations head Vishnu Potty (second left) at Coimbatore on Wednesday. Quiz master Giri Balasubramanian is also seen. Playing it safely with patience and watchful eyes on your competitors moves will yield good results. Vouchsafing this strategy, Nigil Varghese and S Premchand from PSG Institute of Management (PSGIM), won the trophy at the Coimbatore edition of ET in Campus Quiz 2008 held at Hindustan College of Arts and Science on Wednesday. The quiz was presented by Cognizant. Six teams from over 350 participants made it to the finals at the quiz. At a crucial phase in the last round, these future managers from PSGIM watched on calmly as their nearest competitors from Government College of Technology (GCT) scored negative points with their hurried answers.

Team PSGIM’s patience paid off, and they scored on the final question, chalking a victory by just a onepoint margin over the runners-up GCT. The young quiz aficionados were tested and tried on their skills in a five-round quizzing about ‘corporatedom’. The final six teams put their grey cells to work in the exciting contest, which had a round each of cryptic thinking, clueless thinking, visual thinking, rapid thinking and lateral thinking. The six finalists were Amrita School of Business, PSG College of Technology, Jansons School of Business, GRD Institute of Management, PSG Institute of Management and Government College of Technology.

Quizmaster Giri ‘Pickbrain’ Balasubramanian added local flavour to the event by asking the participants to expand the initials of management guru CK Prahlad. And pat came the answer with a sense of pride — Coimbatore Krishna Prahlad! The most nerve-wracking questions, however, came in the last round, where teams could lose crucial points if they gave away the wrong answer. The tension gave way to confusion with GCT mistaking the owner of brand Blackberry. They blurted Motorola instead of Research In Motion, a mistake that cost them the championship. This is where PSGIM’s patience worked and they walked away with the championship trophy. Nigil Varghese and S Premchand from PSGIM walked away with goodies such as handycam, sponsored by Cognizant, digital clock, and sweets from Sri Krishna Sweets. The runners-up, GCT, bagged a cybershot camera each. Other teams were awarded certificates and Reliance Mobiles.
