Police sources said the construction was, at least, a decade old. They were unsure whether the building had any approval. Officials suspect that faulty construction might have caused the collapse that occurred at 1 p.m. The weight of the beam and the sunshade was too heavy for the hollow block walls to withstand. Even as police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel reached the spot, the public removed two persons with minor injuries to hospital. The rescue teams found a chopped leg of one of the victims under the debris. A crane was used to remove the beam under which three persons were trapped. Of the five persons admitted to hospital with injuries, three died.

The deceased were Velumani (57), Krishnagopal (62) and Sundaram (65). Perumalsamy (75) and N.M. Palanivelu (23) were the injured. The deceased and Perumalsamy were from Jagannath Nagar at Peelamedu. Palanivelu of Kavundapadi in Erode district is doing his second-year MCA at a college near Saravanampatti here.
