BU - VP HONOURED

Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor, G. Thiruvasagam (centre) being conferred the Honorary Colonel rank. by Commodore U.N. Chitnavis, Deputy Director-General, NCC Directorate (TN, P, A&N) (left) at a piping ceremony in the university in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam was conferred the rank of an honorary Colonel by the Directorate of National Cadets Corps (Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar) here on Tuesday. Deputy Director-General Commodore U.N. Chitnavis, in a piping ceremony held at the Bharathiar University, conferred the rank on Mr. Thiruvasagam. He would henceforth be the Colonel Commandant of the NCC units of all the institutions that came under the aegis of the university.In his address, Commodore Chitnavis said that the practice of having a Colonel Commandant for every regiment in the Army was started very early.
He was happy with the performance of the NCC units in Coimbatore
“Based on this concept we have been conferring honorary ranks on certain Vice-Chancellors. Mr. Thiruvasagam has come a long way from his humble beginnings and today he is the Vice-Chancellor of a university. His achievements in the NCC are also commendable,” the Commodore said.He said he was happy with the performance of the NCC units in Coimbatore. “Two cadets have gone to Bhutan and Nepal on the youth exchange programme.”

Pointing out that NCC was all about character building and personality development, he said that it converted introverts into extroverts. He urged the Vice-Chancellor to continue his support to the activities of the NCC. Accepting the rank, Mr. Thiruvasagam said that the grooming and training that he had received in his NCC days had stood him in good stead in all his ventures. “The earlier focus of NCC training was on man management and leadership. Today, the nature of training has changed to meet the challenges of time.”

He also said that from the coming academic year, NCC or NSS would be made compulsory co-subjects.The Choice-Based Credit System to be introduced by the Department of Higher Education would include curricular and co-curricular activities. “Attendance will be made compulsory for NCC or NSS and will be included as part of the 140 credits to be secured by the student for clearing a subject. A separate curriculum inclusive of theory and practicals will be designed.A pass in the co-subject is mandatory for an overall pass,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
