Eco Frendly Award

Individual efforts that make little changes will have a huge impact on climate change, according to Chris Gibson, Director of British Council, South India.

Presenting the Eco Awards, constituted by the Residents’ Awareness Association of Coimbatore and the Association of British Scholars, Coimbatore Chapter, here on Thursday he said that one-third of worldwide green house gas emissions came from energy used in buildings. Science and technology would show ways to mitigate effects of climate change. “But, we the people make the difference.” He said, “We can have legislations but they are of little use until we implement them.”

It only needed thinking and effort by individuals to make the difference. Climate change was an important issue for all. “If we all make little changes we will have huge impact,” he said. District Collector V. Palanikumar said there were many rules and laws to check deforestation. Only people’s participation would help in successful implementation of these. “We have to give a safe world to posterity,” he said. The award-winning buildings were: Most Eco-friendly home: Leelavathi Gopikrishna, 340/2A, Sri Balaji Nagar, Thaneerpandal, Peelamedu, Coimbatore; Most Eco-friendly office: Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Anaikatti; Most Eco-friendly gated community: Soundaryam – Santhosham Comfort and Retirement Home, Pachapalayam, Siruvani Main Road. Apart from these, “worthy of mention” awards were also presented to buildings with special eco-friendly features.
