Limb Salvage Surgery

A 30-year-old man from Moonar successfully underwent a "limb salvage surgery" for bone cancer in a city hospital recently as an alternative to amputation of limbs.A team of doctors at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital who performed the surgery on K Balasubramanian, who is a fitter working in Somanur, claimed the limb salvage surgery, that is removal of only the affected parts of bone and replacement with a prosthesis, has been
performed in Coimbatore for the first time
after its introduction in 1988 in Chennai. The patient was diagnosed with agressive bone cancer called Osteosarcoma and for which the standard treatment is amputation of limbs.
