BU's Offers For Disabilities

Students of the Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges with disability will be given an additional hour to complete their ensuing undergraduate and post-graduate examinations, its Vice-Chancellor G. He said that the university examinations that would begin on April 16 would continue for a month. “There are nearly a 100 disabled students studying in the university and its affiliated colleges. They are finding it very difficult to complete their papers in the stipulated time. Hence they will be given an hour extra to finish their examinations.”

The additional time given everywhere was 30 minutes. But, those with visual imparity had to think and dictate their answers to a scribe. This required extra time. Those with a physical disability were unable to keep up with the speed of others, the university had observed. Hence, the Vice-Chancellor has decided to extend the additional time from 30 minutes to one hour. According to him, “this is the first time in the country that a university is giving an hour extra”. In addition to the extra time, these students would be provided with snacks and refreshment during the course of the examination.

Such students would be provided separate rooms in their colleges to sit comfortably. Separate invigilators would also be assigned to them. In keeping with the changes made in the Plus Two examinations, the university too would provide the students 10 minutes’ time to go through the question paper. “The morning examination will begin at 9.30 a.m. Students will go through the paper for 10 minutes and will start writing from 9.40 a.m. The examination will end at 12.40 p.m.,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

Likewise, the afternoon session would begin at 2 p.m. Students would begin writing at 2.10 p.m. and finish at 5.10 p.m. The changes would be carried out by all the departments of the university and also the affiliated colleges, he added.
