News From The CPI Congress

The Left parties while ruling out any possibility of forging an alliance with the ruling Congress for the general elections, said it was determined not let BJP to take advantage of the differences between the Left and Congress and will do every possible efforts for isolating and defeating the saffron party to keep it out of power. The CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat however said the party would soon work to achieve its goal of forging the third political alternative to bipolar national parties-Congress and BJP after the ongoing 19th party congress.
CPI would soon work to achieve its goal of forging the third political alternative to bipolar national parties-Congress and BJP

Karat said he was not in favour of getting into alliance with Congress and BJP for different reasons though the two parties have different motto and political base. The former is secular but bourgeois party, which reacts when the communal forces take the offensive, while the latter is clouted with communal hue. In order to giving practical shape to the third political alternative, the party will preserve relations with all non-Congress secular parties for developing united struggles and joint actions on common issues. Karat called upon the Left parties to work for its achievement and strengthen the Left unity to facilitate this work.

In the special issue of his party’s organ “People’s Democracy” which is released at the backdrop of the party congress, the editorial highlights the organisational set-up of the CPM. The editorial speaks out the CPM’s strategic objective is the successful completion of the ‘people’s democratic revolution,’ which can be only achieved by completing the anti-imperialist, anti-feudal and anti-monopoly capital tasks. But such desirable goal cannot be accomplished until the Indian state led by the big bourgeoisies is replaced by the working class.

And this replacement can be made possible by the constituting the people’s democratic front comprised of all classes that are against imperialism, feudal landlordism and the wealth bourgeoisie class. The United Nation Progressive Alliance (UNPA) and the Left together will be aiming at creating a mutual base for the next ruling arrangement at the Centre. In the event of some of the UPA partners opting for the third alternative, the non-BJP, non-Congress side could become formidable.

The Left parties itself is grappling with lot of issues. While pointing towards the need for expansion of its political base, Karat asserted that party is facing the lack of young blood with the required discipline and willingness to work selflessly. Nearly 54 percent of party members nationwide are in the 40-plus age group, while only a close to 12 percent are women.

The party is also looking to broaden its political role according to changing environment while revealed the lack of consensus among the party members on some inherent issues. For instance, on the issue of SEZ, only eight delegated raised against it while the entire house was in favour of it with some modifications in the policy.
