Coimbatore – Mettuppalayam Bypass Road

Preliminary works for the proposed 50 km long Coimbatore – Mettuppalayam bypass road is under progress. With the increasing vehicular traffic, the Coimbatore – Mettuppalayam Road was becoming congested and accidents were also on the rise. This led to the idea for a bypass road. Even the proposal ran into trouble with farmers association’s opposing the project fearing land acquisition. Instead of a bypass road the associations demanded and suggested that the existing Mettuppalayam Road could be widened and strengthened.

According to NHAI sources, the road would start from Sulur and will join the existing Mettuppalayam Road at Narashimanaickenpalayam.

The authorities were of the opinion that the bypass road from Avanashi Road at Neelambur junction would help in decongesting the city roads. However, the National Highways Authority of India has started the preliminary works for the bypass road in terms of finalising the alignment. NHAI authorities plan to start the bypass road work right from Tiruchi Road at Sulur instead of Avanashi Road. The entire work is likely to be completed in two-and-a-half years time at an outlay of Rs 500 crores.

The road would be a four lane road with 60 mts width and tenders have already been called for. However, the authorities propose to have space on either side of the extreme road boundaries for extending the road into a six lane in the event of a need arising for the same owing to growth in vehicular traffic. According to NHAI sources, the road would start from Sulur and will join the existing Mettuppalayam Road at Narashimanaickenpalayam.
