Hanging Cable Troubles People
Cables hanging along the Puliakulam Road in Coimbatore posing a threat to residents. Pairs of precariously hanging cables have become a cause for concern for those living on Puliakulam Road in the city. It is a common sight from Sungam Junction towards Puliakulam Vinayakar temple via Carmel Garden School. Residents have to frequently tie-up these cables to poles otherwise they will have to struggle to enter their houses. Says Mrs. Sasi, a resident of the area: “Even if we forget to clean our houses, we will not forget to tie the cables. Otherwise we are in for trouble. We have now learnt to cope up with this nuisance but visitors or guests end up coming in contact with these cables.” Says S. Venkatesh, another resident: “No body knows what these cables are meant for. We do not even know to whom they belonged to.” At places, these cables run too close to electric wires. They can become conductors and even carriers of electricity. Once rain starts, the situation will worsen.
“We contacted the Corporation authorities, the police, electricity board and even telecom authorities but nobody is owning up the responsibility for sorting this out,” he says. Even some of the officials suggested throwing snapping the cables if nobody is taking up responsibility.
The secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, K. Kathirmathiyon, said that no regulatory mechanism existed to sort out such issues. Putting up cables along roads in a haphazard manner has become the order of the day. There were instances of cables tied to electric posts posing threat to lives of citizens. Whoever wants to draw cables can obtain permission from the local body concerned by paying a fee for erecting posts.
