Health Workers Were Recruited

A medical officer and 18 multi-purpose health workers recruited for the Coimbatore Corporation were given appointment orders by Mayor R. Venkatachalam at a function held at the civic body on Wednesday. This takes the total strength of medical officers (doctors) to 39 and that of the health workers to 136. The total number of posts of the health workers is 140. Presiding over the function, the Mayor said 1,072 appointments had been made to fill up vacancies in various posts in the Corporation after the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government lifted the ban on recruitment. The lifting of the ban that enabled recruitment was aimed at improving the functioning of the local bodies.

The Mayor also handed over cheques for grants to some of the beneficiaries of the Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme that was being implemented under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Totally, 118 persons got the subsidy to construct houses costing Rs.1.12-lakh each under the scheme. The Mayor said all the mission schemes were aimed at benefiting the people in the city. Deputy Mayor N. Karthik pointed out that many doctors were appointed to the Corporation hospital over the last one year. This and the development schemes being implemented only sought to point out that the Corporation was a performing local body.

Corporation South Zone Chairman said the BSUP scheme would turn the city slum-free. He said people living in 173 slums were to be provided houses with grants from Central and State Governments. The first two phases of the project for 80 slums were to be implemented at Rs.258.56 crore. The first phase would provide 2,707 houses to people in 18 slums and 9,923 houses of 268 sq.ft. each would be built in the second phase for people in 62 slums. The third phase for 91 slums would cost Rs.184.80 crore.
