Coimbatore, which has a large number of windmills, has started getting wind turbines on its houses too. ICMS Power is in the process of erecting windmills in at least half a dozen houses here. The company has introduced ICMS-UE series Domestic Wind Turbines that can convert wind energy to electrical energy for domestic use. The machines are in four models – 600 Watts, 1,500 Watts, 3,300 Watts and 4,200 Watts. The company has erected nearly 1,600 turbines across the country.

According to K. Senthil Kumar, Assistant Manager – Sales, the wind turbines can be installed either on the roof top or on the ground. It is 30 ft above the ground level and can generate energy with the average wind flow in this region. The life of a turbine is 20 to 25 years and power can be drawn from it directly to the house. It can meet the entire energy need of a domestic household. A release from the company said the machines were made of permanent aerodynamic magnetic generators that could produce electricity from wind speed of 1.8 m/s. The machines were eligible for a subsidy up to 50 per cent.
