Towards A Better Life

Children from orphanages attending a programme on value education organised by the Women’s Wing of the Art of Living in Coimbatore on Saturday. Children from eight orphanages in and around Coimbatore will receive lessons on basic human values, health and hygiene by a group of working women.

The project, “We care, We share,” was launched here on Saturday by ‘Sanvitti,’ the Ladies Wing of Art of Living. More than 550 children who gathered at Mani Higher Secondary School to attend the programme were given tips on basic manners, handling difficult situations in life and values such as honesty. “These children have never experienced love, affection, care or attention. The negative emotions in them are high and they are constantly under stress,” says Sasirekha Vengatesh, a volunteer. The programme aims at helping them overpower the negative emotions and lead a steady life, she adds. The Ladies Wing plans to conduct the programme in the eight orphanages frequently. “Most of the orphanages get funds and daily requirements such as food and clothing. The children are also sent to schools, but they are rarely taught the values of life,” Ms.Sasirekha points out.

It will be an interactive programme where each child will develop a personal rapport with the teacher. The programme will include instilling in the children a sense of gratitude, self esteem, discipline, and honesty. They will also be taught about the need for team work, which will automatically bring out leadership qualities in them. In addition, they will be given the basic course in Art of Living, “Art Excel,” which is aimed at the overall development of children and yoga.

The group is roping in corporate companies to support the children. It is also planning to seek help from college students who can act as volunteers in doing something for the children. “Monetary assistance alone is not enough. The children also need a little bit of attention, care and love,” she adds. Cultural programmes and magic shows were organised for the children on the launch day.
