Watch Dog Groups In Schools

The Women’s Solidarity Group, a group that works for restoring women’s rights, is planning to form Watch Dog groups in schools to protect the interests of girl children. It will assess the infrastructure facilities, knowledge-transfer methods followed by the teachers, teacher–student relationships, atrocities on students such as corporal punishments, and threats, Bagirathi Ramanathan, founder of the group, said

“The concept is still in its initial phase. We plan to implement is soon,” she added. It would also monitor the fee structure of the school to see that no discrimination against girl students was practised. The volunteers of the Watch Dog group would work closely with the schools to identify human rights violations at school-level and ensure a violence-free school environment.

Professionals and other individuals who were interested in working for the cause of girl children and women could join the Watch Dog group. “Atrocities on girl children and victimisation at the school level are rampant. These also include threats leading to suicide, physical abuse, and mental torture that often leads to depression,” Ms. Ramanathan said. Interested persons can contact the Women’s Solidarity Group at 2550794 or 98945-99186.
