Court Boycot :
More than 3,500 lawyers practicing in various sessions courts and sub-ordinate judiciary courts across the district abstained from the courts on Monday for the fourth day on Monday. The lawyers were opposing the recommendations of the Madras High Court and the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that declared that court staff who had done a course in law could compete for the post of civil judges in the proposed recruitment. The lawyers opposed the move and abstained from the court for three days last week and the agitation continued. The lawyers pointed out that the agitation was likely to continue for a few more days.
Jewellery missing
Variety Hall Road police are investigating into a case of looting of 30 sovereigns of jewellery from the house of Sivarajan (38) of V.H. Road area. He had locked his house and had gone to a park with his family. On his return within 90 minutes, he found the doors broke open and the jewellery missing.
Students stage agitation
More than 50 students along with their parents from Gudalur, near Kavundampalayam, picketed the Collectorate on Monday demanding adequate bus service for the benefit of children going to a school at Samichettipalayam.
Teachers throng Collectorate
Nearly 100 teachers both serving and retired along with their family members thronged the Collectorate seeking action against a retired headmaster of Mahalingapuram area in Pollachi on charges of having cheated them to a tune of Rs 1.5 crore. The petitioners contended that they had invested their earnings in a chit scheme promoted by the headmaster.
Issue of pattas
More than 500 residents of Eachanari, NH Nagar, Srinivasapuram and Ganesapuram thronged the Collectorate on Monday demanding that they should be issued with the house site pattas. The residents had earlier tried to occupy 85 acres in the area opposing the alleged move to hand over the land to a private party. The 85-acre was part of the 220 acres that belonged to the Central Government. The revenue officials promised the residents that their representations would be recommended to the Government and pointed out that encroaching upon the land would amount to violation of the law.
Road block
Traffic on busy Tiruchi Road was disrupted on Monday morning when the residents of Nanjappa Nagar in Ward Number 7 resorted to a road blockade protesting against the erratic schedule of drinking water supply. Following assurance from the Corporation authorities and elected representatives that water supply schedule would be streamlined the residents gave up the agitation.
Miraculous escape
A two-wheeler rider Vijayalakshmi had a providential escape when the scooter in which she was travelling was crushed by a container lorry that fell on its sides. It is learnt that the container vehicle was first hit by a Government bus and fell on its sides on a scooter. Student dies
Vijayakumar (18), a Plus-One student, who sustained serious burns when he reportedly attempted to commit suicide by setting himself afire, died at the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital on Sunday.
12 held
The police on Sunday arrested 12 persons on charges of selling illicit liquor in various parts of the district. A raid was conducted at Kondalampatti, Attur and Mettur. The personnel seized 650 litres.
