M.P. Veerendrakumar, Member of Parliament, and Chairman and Managing Director of Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Company Limited, Kozhikode, speaking at the convocation of CMS College of Science and Commerce in Coimbatore on Sunday. With the threat of six major rivers vanishing by the end of the century looming large, there is a huge responsibility on the student community to preserve the the environment , M.P. Veerendrakumar, Member of Parliament, Chairman and Managing Director of Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Company Limited, Kozhikode, said here on Sunday.
Delivering the graduation address at CMS College of Science and Commerce, he lamented that the Ganges was one among the six threatened rivers. “When one visits the Himalayas, one can see the people there living in harmony with Nature without disturbing the mountains, meadows, green valleys and rivers. But, we in cities pollute not only the environment, but also the water resources,” Mr. Veerendrakumar said.
Since increased human activity resulted in the degradation of the environment, he exhorted students to take extra efforts so that mankind could continue to survive on the earth.He urged the candidates who were graduating to take the warnings of environmentalists seriously so that the threat did not become a reality.Chairman of CMS Educational and Charitable Trust M.P. Gopalakrishnan urged the students to become competent in their chosen area of study and profession. “Only true competence is the key to success and fame,” he asserted. Nearly 400 candidates, including 14 rank holders, received degree certificates. K.T. Varkey, principal of the college, spoke.
