Herbal Garden In Coimbatore Jail
The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Prisons), R. Nataraj, on Thursday inaugurated a herbal garden with over 50 saplings and a legal aid centre for the benefit of inmates.The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, P. Munivelu, and the Superintendent of Prisons (incharge), P. Govindharajan, said that the herbal garden has been named after the late Superintendent of Prisons, G. Doss, who died while on duty.
The garden has come up on a five acre in front the Central prison and it has organic manure generation facility as well making use of the vegetable waste and other bio degradable waste that gets generated from the prison. V. Shanmugapandi, Sidha Doctor and G. Mayilsamy, an organic farmer had come forward to provide the herbal saplings and manure generation facilities free of cost. The garden that had come up with 50 varieties now would be developed by adding another 450 varieties of herbal plants. The objective of the garden was to generate at least one lakh herbal saplings before the end of 2008.
The ADGP also inaugurated a legal aid centre wherein the educated prisoners (especially in legal studies) have come together to render legal assistance to the fellow inmates. Three law graduates who are murder case accused would be the team leaders. The objective of the cell would be to help the prisoners file their appeals or in handling other cases of civil disputes that they face besides the case in which they had been sentenced or facing trial. The groups would even help drafting petitions and appeal affidavits and would be assisted by Advocate L. Raman. The teams have given the names as Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar and Nehru legal aid groups.
