Proposed Tirupur District - Report In 2 Days
The Chief Minister had announced that Tirupur would be made a district and allocation for the same was made in the last budget. The proposal was to reorganise the boundaries of Coimbatore and Erode districts to form a separate district with Tirupur as headquarters. To a question on whether the Government had fixed any specific time frame for completion of the exercise, Mr.Shaktikanta Das said that any initiative announced in the budget would be normally completed within the same fiscal. Though there were specific parameters for formation of any new district in terms of geographical area, population and number of revenue firkas, peculiarities and ground realities would have to be taken into consideration.
Those who attended the meeting included Coimbatore Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Kovai Thangam (Valparai), A.S. Mani (Pongalur), S.M. Velusamy (Palladam), S.P. Velumani (Perur), V. Jayaraman (Pollachi), C. Shanmugavelu (Udumalpet), Prema (Avanashi), T. Malaravan (Coimbatore West), R. Chinnasamy (Singanallur), O.K. Chinnaraj ( Mettuppalayam), S. Damodaran (Kinathukkadavu) all MLAs, P.V. Damodaran and V.K. Lakshmanan, former MLAs.
Representatives of the Members of Parliament representing the Nilgiris and Coimbatore read out their suggestions. Majority of the people who attended the meeting opposed any move to remove Madathukulam and Gudimangalam blocks in Udumalpet, Sulur and Palladam blocks and Annur block from Coimbatore and attach them to Tirupur. They said that these blocks by virtue of geographical reasons and proximity were attached to Coimbatore. People would find it difficult to visit Tirupur to meet the Collector or revenue officials or the District Headquarters Hospital.
They asked the authorities to ensure that a particular area was never shared between two districts or two Assembly constituencies as it would inconvenience elected representative and the people. A suggestion was made to create another district with Pollachi as headquarters. Mr. Shaktikanta Das clarified that the Government has not made any decision on the jurisdiction. All suggestions voiced at these meetings would be reported to the Government for deciding on the boundaries.
