Save The Injured Tooth
As soon as teeth fall off, they must be recovered. The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown and Aishwarya Microscope Dental Centre have teamed up to put injured teeth back in their position. The ‘Save the Injured Tooth’ project will involve an awareness campaign through a helpline, a website and other methods of direct contact with the public.
Project convener and dental surgeon at the centre G.K. Vijayalakshmi told presspersons here recently that the first thing one should do was to put the fallen tooth into a container of milk.Milk was closest to what the saliva contained and helped in maintaining good health of the teeth.People lost their teeth while playing or in road accidents or even when they hit the floor face first because of slipping. As soon as the teeth fell off, these must be recovered immediately, put in a container of milk and brought to the dental surgeon for re-attachment.
This simple procedure had to be highlighted as awareness level was low, Dr. Vijayalakshmi said. Thousands of healthy teeth were knocked off or broken every day in the country. Apart from the physical, this had a psychological impact also because the front teeth were the major casualty in accidents or when people slip and hit their face on the floor.
While some people stopped smiling, some others even stopped attending functions. They had to endure the loss if they could not afford the cost of implants. But, timely location and preservation of the natural teeth and rushing to the dental surgeon’s helped overcome all these problems. A vast majority of the people did not know of this process, Dr. Vijayalakshmi said. They could know of this from the project’s website ( http://www.saveinjuredteeth.com/).
With the Rotary Club’s help a 24-hour helpline (93611-22444) would provide these details to the public. The doctor said she would answer queries from the public. “Every tooth has life. It must be saved,” she said. “This is a service that people across the country should be made aware of,” Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown president Hiren N. Desai said. The project, the helpline and the website would be launched in the city on July 19 by Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy.
