TNAU Introduced New Corp
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has introduced eight new crop varieties, five farm implements and four management technologies for 2008. New rice variety CO ( R) 49 is a medium slender white fine rice similar to BPT 5204, with grain yield of 6,286 kg a hectare, which is suitable for late Samba / Thaladi seasons. It can be cultivated as transplanted rice in the State, barring Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and the Nilgiris districts, which get off-season rains.
Paiyur (Ra) 2 ragi variety has a yield of 2,527 kg a hectare and can be adopted in Dharmpuri, Krishnagiri, Salem and Namakkal districts. Groundnut VRI (Gn) 7 variety with a yield of 1,865 kg a hectare is suitable for rainfed tracts of Namakkal, Salem, Erode, Dharmapuri and Perambalur districts.Brinjal PLR (B) 2 with a yield of 38 tonnes a hectare is suitable for cultivation in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore, Kancheepuram and Perambular districts. Cumbu Napier Hybrid Grass CO (CN) 4 with a green fodder yield of 380 to 400 tonnes a hectare, Green Manure Kolingi – MDU (Ko) 1 with a biomass yield of 9,004 kg a hectare are suitable for cultivation throughout the State.
Manila tamarind PKM (MT) 1 variety with a yield of 79 kg a tree a year can be grown in rainfed tracts of the Southern districts. Casuarina MTP (CA) 1 with a yield of 100 tonnes a hectare. (wood) is ideal for cultivation in coastal areas, sand soil, red lateritic and other well-drained inland soils. New farm implements are: the battery-operated portable wetland weeder, , the tractor-operated fruit-shake harvester, , the tractor-operated rotary spading machine, and the tractor-operated subsoil coir pith applicator.Botanical based silkworm uzifly ovipositional deterrent, Integral Pest Management of serpentine lead miner Liriomyza Trifolii Burgess in vegetables, slope stabilisation, Panchakavya, and high density planting in mango, are the new management technologies.
