Paper Cone And Tube Manufacturers Strike

The strike by about 1,000 paper cone and tube manufacturers in the State entered the second day on Thursday. D. Rajendran, president of the South India Paper Cones and Tubes Manufacturer Association, has said in a release that the units were on a three day strike from July 30 to protest the increase in raw material prices. While the cost of raw materials had gone up by 30 per cent, the other costs such as transportation, wages, and interest rates had increased by 50 per cent.

The units were seeking 25 per cent price revision by the textile mills that buy these products. These units were also hit by frequent power cut. Mr. Rajendran said the units did not have Government support and employed a large number of women workers. With stoppage of production, the loss was estimated to be Rs. 1 crore a day to the member units.
