B.Ed Course Exam Will Continue

Examinations for the B.Ed. course will continue to be conducted centrally and evaluation will be done by external examiners, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, told on Wednesday. He was responding to a letter from M. Manjunath Gowda, manager of the Bangalore-based magazine Activity Educator, to The Hindu with regard to the high percentage of students failing in the recently held B.Ed. examinations of the university.

He has alleged that the university was responsible for the large number of failures. Considering the high fee the students had to pay towards course and examinations, many of them have not been successful in completing the same. Mr. Gowda has blamed the Vice-Chancellor for not monitoring the progress of the education colleges that has led to the poor results. The Vice-Chancellor said when the respective education colleges were holding their examinations a year ago and internal evaluation was being done, all the candidates were declared successful.

“How can this be? There has to be at least one or two failures or absentees. On inspection, the conduct of examinations and evaluation were found to contain many anomalies. Hence, I centralised the examinations and arranged for external evaluation. Only 35 per cent passed. So there is a furore about the quality of the institutions and the university’s monitoring,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

He added that students were not preparing and were not being prepared properly for the examinations. When the evaluation was done by the respective colleges, the results were very good; but, it turned out to be poor when it was done externally. The Vice-Chancellor has instructed those who have failed to apply for revaluation or for supplementary examinations (in case of arrear in single subject). He asserted that the system would continue to ensure proper conduct and evaluation of examinations.
