Effort To Conserve The Macaques

Connecting corridor put up to help the Lion Tailed Macaques move from tree to tree. In an effort to conserve the endangered Lion Tailed Macaques (LTMs) in Valparai Range of the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), the Forest Department has put up a ladder-like corridor made of bamboo and rope for linking two trees. This is to help the macaques to leap from tree to tree without having to come down and cross the road where they face the risk of being run over by vehicles.

The 958 sq km Anaimalai Tiger Reserve, the erstwhile Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary has 520 LTMs. During the last few months about five LTMs were hit by speeding vehicles. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, R. Sundarrajan conducted a study to initiate remedial measures in the accident-prone pockets i.e., the habitat and crossing corridor of the LTMs.

A team led by Field Director of the ATR, H.D. Basuvaraju identified the accident prone pockets and found that the LTMs got down to the ground to cross the road in places where there was an opening in the canopy. Hence, the Department decided to install connecting corridors between trees, especially in places where Macaques were being hit by vehicles. As many as 25 corridors had been installed so far. The results would be studied and more such corridors would be made if required.
