Jayashree, M.Com first rank holder, at the sixth graduation day of Sri Ramalinga Sowdambigai College of Science and Commerce in Coimbatore on Thursday. The academic programmes of higher educational institutions should be revamped regularly, according to N. Markandam, former Vice-Chancellor of Gandhi Gram University.
At the graduation day of Sri Ramalinga Sowdambigai College of Science and Commerce here on Thursday, he said that political, economic and social changes were taking place rapidly. Due to climatic changes and environmental degradation, natural calamities were affecting human life.“So our higher education should address the above said challenges making our young men and women study and find out solutions to overcome them.”
The standard of higher education was becoming poor. The purpose of education should be to develop the integrated personality of students. It should be made more meaningful. After higher secondary school education, students now wanted to go to professional colleges. There was a demand for these courses. After completing the courses, they found it easy to get jobs of good salaries. In this process of learning and getting jobs, their goal in life was becoming narrow. “So, there is a need for reforming the system of higher education imparted in the arts and science and professional colleges.”
The school education should be knowledgeable and work-oriented. Students should be oriented in a couple of trades so that after school education they were able to find an employment. “Students should be confident to lead a better life even without a degree from the higher education institution,” he said.Further, students must be asked to present a study paper on issues such as hunger, poverty, conflicts and violence regularly. It must be followed by discussion. They should also be encouraged to spend some time in reading and contemplating on the messages of the great teachers and thinkers.
Academic programmes should be combined with value-oriented courses. Our research programmes should be useful for the development of the society in all respects, he said.Higher education should make our young men and women more confident, courageous, industrious, intelligent and wise,” he added. M. Balasubramaniam, Chairman of Sri Ramalinga Sowdambigai Educational Trust and N.S. Krishnaraju, Secretary of Sri Ramalinga Sowdambigai Educational Trust offered felicitations.
