Children learning painting at Geethanjali Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore. Kindergarten and pre-KG students of Geethanjali Matriculation School are learning through impressions of their hands, feet and fingers. An innovative method of learning introduced by the school aims at developing the innate abilities of children.
“Languages and numbers are learnt better this way. Even children who had no interest in holding a pencil now show interest in drawing and writing,” says Bernadette Ravikumar, principal of the school. The classrooms are filled with the children’s art works. Paper cuttings coloured with finger prints and outlines of the children’s palms filled with various colours with their names inscribed in them adorn the walls.
“Instead of conducting routine events such as ‘fruits day,’ ‘colours day’ and ‘vegetables day,’ a different exercise such as this helps the children learn concepts and languages better,” Ms.Bernadette adds. In addition, each students gets a chance to do the art work. Using waste paper, the children are taught to make flowers and leaves for the paper trees on the classroom walls. The teachers too take special interest in helping the children. They also ensure hygienic practices while painting with foot and finger prints.
