The Coimbatore region alone accounted for 60,000 passport applications last year and the number of applications is expected to increase further. The Chennai Regional Passport Office issued at least 1,200 passports every day and 25 per cent to 30 per cent of them were tatkal passports, Ms. Ravichandran said. Chennai probably accounted for the highest number of tatkal category passport applications in the entire country. To a query on police verifications being cited as a the reason for delay in issuing passports, Ms. Ravichandran said for verifications done and sent within 21 days of the application date, the Ministry paid Rs 100 per application and for applications verified and sent after 21 days the incentive was only Rs 25.
