Bhoomi Poja For Parallel Taxiway

A bhoomi pooja was performed at the Coimbatore Airport on Thursday for construction of a parallel taxiway, here on Thursday. Airport Director, K. Hemalatha told that the parallel taxiway will bring down the runway occupancy time, considerably reduce aircraft turn around time between landing and take off, and help aircraft save Aviation Turbine Fuel. Operations-wise the Airport Authority of India would be in a position to operate more aircraft per hour.

At present the aircraft on landing has to taxi along the entire runway, take a U-turn and travel half the distance to reach the apron before coming to a full halt/ parking. This resulted in every aircraft utilising the runway for more time, thus holding back the take offs and landings of other aircraft. Once the parallel taxiway comes through, the aircraft on completing the taxiing could enter the parallel taxiway and proceed to the apron/tarmac for parking, leaving the runway open for other flights.

Of the estimated cost of Rs.42 crore, Rs.32 crore would be for the civil works in terms of 1,790 m parallel taxiway with a width of 44 m including shoulders on either side. A sum of Rs.10 crore would be for the electrical works. The fixed time frame for completion of the entire project will be one year. The Airport at present has six parking bays besides one isolation bay for aircraft with security perception. Average aircraft movement per day was 23 landings/ take offs. Every day there used to be peak hour congestion in the morning, afternoon and again during the evening. During these periods, though there were enough parking bays, runway constraint remained a major problem.

However, with the parallel taxiway, this problem could be overcome. Present project also includes creation of three more parking bays for handling peak hour traffic. As part of the project, the AAI is also embarking on strengthening the existing parking bay for installation of aero bridges. Aero bridges form part of the expansion of the airport terminal planned at Rs.78 crore wherein the 6,500 sq.m. building would be expanded to 13,500 sq.m. The project is expected to commence shortly.
