Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta (left) reviewing the preparation of final electoral rolls at a meeting in Coimbatore Collectorate on Wednesday. The final photo voter rolls in respect of all the districts, barring three, will be released in a phased manner by October 20, State Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Gupta said that there had been 37.76 lakh claims for inclusion in electoral rolls across the State. Verification had revealed that there had been 21 lakh cases pertaining either to dead or shifted categories. In the entire State, Coimbatore received the highest 3.61 lakh claims, Chennai 2.50 lakh and Kancheepuram 2.25 lakh claims for inclusion in rolls. These claims required more time for field verification. Hence, the final photo voter rolls in respect of these three districts would be released after October 20 in a phased manner.

The final photo voter rolls in respect of the Nilgiris, Dindigul and Theni was released on October 15, while Perambalur and Ariyalur would be released on October 16, Karur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari on October 17, Tiruchirapalli, Villuppuram, Thiruvallur and Thoothukudi on October 18, Thanjavur on October 19 and the remaining districts on October 20.
The State had achieved 99 per cent electoral roll coverage and 97 per cent Electors Photo Voter Identity Card coverage. There would be another special summary revision of rolls next year with January 1, 2009 as the qualifying age for those who had attained the age of 21.
