Contribute Books For This Deepavali
Arumbukal Vasippu Iyakkam, a children’s reading movement started by Adaiyaalam, a network of people encouraging reading habits among children from socially and economically backward communities, has appealed to the public to contribute books for this Deepavali. “We want more people to donate old books that are suitable for children,” said V.Dhandapani, trustee of Adaiyaalam. “If you can donate at least Rs.50 towards the reading movement, you can be part of a society that is bred on a culture of reading,” he added.
Sourcing books is a challenge, he said. Bookstores had their own troubles when it came to free donations. Though a few people offered to donate the books were unsuitable for children. “Those who wish to donate can give us picture and story books preferably in Tamil. Even children’s magazines and science fiction can be given,” he said. The movement encourages children to read and works in the format of a mobile library. Children read, and discuss books in addition to acting out chapters from some of them. Currently, it involves 1,700 children in Perianaickenpalayam Block.
